Chapter 6
Loud music comes from the ballroom. I smooth down my skirts and focus on trying not to go crazy. I don't want to be here, but I know if I don't at least put in a small appearance, it'll be noted and people may not want to do any business with me in the future. That news won't go down well with mother and father at all. They're depending on me to at least make some kind of impression while at Grimm Academy. Sometimes I wonder if that's the main reason they sent me.
Lights glitter from every part of the room, and the decorations only add to that. It almost looks as if it's snowed on the inside of the room.
Around me, couples and groups of friends talk with one another, some of them dance in the centre of the floor, but not one of them pays any attention to me.
I pick up a goblet of punch and drink it slowly, scanning the room for the one person I want to see more than most.
Kai isn't anywhere to be found. That's not surprising really. He's been avoiding me. I'm not sure how he manages it when I'm looking for him, nor when I remember parts of his schedule, but it's become a skill of his, and one I'm not a massive fan of.
"Would you like to dance?" a male voice says from beside me.
I turn to find a handsome young noble stood beside me with his hand outstretched. I think his name is Charles, and if memory serves, he's a duke's son from one of the bigger kingdoms.
Not the kind of man I should be saying no to. Nor the kind who normally pay any attention to me, but I don't worry about that too much. Now isn't the time for it.
"I'd be honoured." I take his hand, ignoring how clammy it is. He must be as nervous as I am about dancing with a stranger. "Isn't it reassuring that the academy teaches us all the same steps?" I ask him as we take our position on the dancefloor.
This seems to reassure him, as a more confident smile crosses his face. "It is, Lady Gerda."
Oh no. Do I need to say his name? I'm not completely sure that Charles is correct and I don't want to be the fool that gets it wrong.
I'm saved by the beginning of the song. I dip into a neat curtsy as he bows. We come together, only our palms touch as we walk around one another along with all the other couples around us. We'll change partners further into the dance, which is why it doesn't matter to most people who they start off with. In all likelihood, Charles wants a moment with one of the other girls on the floor and is just using me to get there.
I don't mind. Dancing can be fun, though not so much when I'm worrying about other things.
Music flows through me, the rhythm easy to follow and enjoyable.
